THE LIVINGSTONE ISLAND

Livingstone Island plays a major role in the history of Zambia if not the whole world.

David Livingstone, the missionary explorer, viewed the Mosi-Oa-Tunya (THE SMOKE THAT THUNDERS) from Livingstone Island, on the 16th of November 1855 with help of the local tribesmen (THE KOLOLO UNDER CHIEF SEKELETU) using dugout canoes. He later named the Mosi-Oa-Tunya, The Victoria Falls after Queen Victoria.

On the 16th November 2005 celebrations were held all around Livingstone to mark 150 years since David Livingstone first sighted the Victoria Falls and in recognition of this occasion a commemorative plaque was designed and placed on the island for all to see in year’s to come.

Livingstone Island, being part of the Victoria Falls that is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a world heritage site, plus its geological location makes it a very unique picnic spot.

It can most certainly be classed as one of the most awesome picnic spots in the world and certainly worth a visit.

Livingstone Island was opened in 1992 to provide exclusive and unique picnics on the edge of the Victoria Falls. It caters for Tongabezi Lodge and the other hotels, lodges and other people around the Victoria Falls area both on the Zambian and the Zimbabwean sides.

Livingstone Island is a 5-8 minutes boat ride from the Royal Livingstone Hotel and is located in the middle of the Zambezi River, touching the lip of the Victoria Falls, where the water thunders down the 103m drop. Access to this unique Island is seasonal and depends entirely on the water level in the Zambezi River

Due to the unique nature of the Island only 16 guests may visit at any one time and enjoy a choice of five daily visits, restricting this exclusive island to only 80 visitors per day. WE HAVE TO PROTECT AND PRESERVE THE NATURAL HABITAT OF THE AREA.

It is highly recommended booking an island visit in advance. Bookings should be made through.

ACTIVITIES
